‘Soldier’ – A collaborative song mosaic

Ryan Miller is an extremely talented elementary teacher. I was lucky enough to meet this creative individual and learn first-hand about his passion for combining his love of music and his love of students. The following quote from his “Oddfellow-music” blog site states his unique, but powerful educational philosophy:

This blog site has been developed to showcase the infusion of music and ICT with educational content for students. For each of the highlighted projects, students have been empowered to display their learning through the entire process of song-writing and sound recording including composition, engineering and production. These projects are a true representation of student engagement and participation in their own learning.

In a very timely manner, Ryan just shared with me “Soldier” which he describes as “a powerful collaborative song mosaic and video tribute which deals with the conflict and sacrifice of war from a child’s perspective”.

If you should happen to think that “Soldier” is a “one hit wonder” … think again. I encourage readers to view other “multi-media with a message”, musical presentations that Ryan and his students have created. Although there are many, I encourage you to examine “Listen – A Song Mosaic“. As Ryan states “this project was very exciting for everyone involved and it was a genuine infusion of Social Justice, Student Voice and ICT.”

Knowing that the “Listen” song mosaic, which is shared as a YouTube video may be blocked by school filters, Ryan has also shared this video off Andy McKiel’s web site. This alternative site for “Listen” should be accessible to all.

Thanks Ryan for sharing your students’ voices together with your unique musical talents with our readers.

Take care & keep smiling :-)
